A hip cultural center with the intention of offering a more interesting cultural selection than your typical club or bar, but without the solemnity of a cultural center, the Foro Cultural Hilvana is a new breed and sits somewhere in between the two. Mexico City is a diverse place where several cultures meet and share their special particularities with each other, they forge a communal identity but also retain the traditions and customs of their place of origin, which is also enjoyable for most of the other community members too; there is, especially, an important presence of people from South American countries. As such, the Foro Cultural Hilvana is known as an important dance club that has presentations by groups performing live music from other regions.

The cultural nature of Hilvana presents itself in the form of classes before a presentation, such as the salsa format for example, where free salsa classes for beginners will be provided between 8 and 9:30 p.m., before a live group takes the stage at 11 and doesn’t stop playing till 2:30 a.m. The cultural center wants to make this such a club-like experience that they even have bouncers at the entrance, who will make you wait a little bit just to keep up with appearances, and if you get there early the access is normally 2X1 (even free for the first 50 people to access the place). There are several amenities for patrons such as a fully stocked kitchen, which serves up delicious offerings like the “Mushroom” burger for a price; and beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages.

The atmosphere is lively and festive at Hilvana, make no mistake people go there to dance, and even if you don’t take a partner with you to the location, you’re sure to find someone looking for one as well. The crowd is young for the most part, but you can also see some older patrons looking to dance the night away as well. The Hilvana just went through a major remodeling effort and was left as good as new, as if it belonged in Roma or Condesa but this was just to become one of the city’s most enticing cultural experiences.

The Foro Hilvana is actually located on the former Puente de Alvarado avenue, now renamed Mexico-Tenochtitlan, right in front of the Metrobús Línea 4 station “Museo San Carlos”, and a few blocks from Metro station “Hidalgo” and the intersection with Paseo de la Reforma avenue, the area may get a little sketchy late at night so it’s better to not hang around too long after. Either way, the Foro Hilvina is a nice little cultural adventure that might get you interested in something new all with the comfortable amenities of a typical nightclub.
